i…It’s mine, It’s me, this is who i am, these are beliefs about school(s), education, elearning, instructional design, and life in general. ihate school, ilove learning. irant, irave, ifeel, ibelieve in education. ibelieve school as we know it needs to be dissected, bulldozed, and put back together. i want options when it comes to education for my kids…i want all kids to have options. i feel that passion and creativity need to find their way back into education, more importantly, the classroom. i hate seeing kids walk in lines.
learn…is what i do. Everyday. It is as much my job as my “real” job. When i feel that i am not learning, i feel bored and frustrated. Wanting to learn and being curious are the two greatest gifts I hope to pass on to my 2 children. Learning in school is often confused with covering topics. i hate coverage, i love learning- real, messy, authentic learning. At the heart of this learning is a belief that technology is changing and will change education if we let go of our restrictive paradigms and hang-ups. i am learning that our teachers are overwhelmed and unsure where to start when it comes to fitting technology into their instruction. i am also learning that not everyone thinks like me (this is a very good thing). i am currently learning mandarin and kung fu. You?
initiative…is what got me into this mess. It led me to create my own site, my own blog. i hope my kids get the initiative to learn and wonder and find their passions…actually i would be happy right now if they had the initiative to pick up their toys. Initiative is what we need more of in our schools…and what our schools must learn to support in their teachers and administrators if we hope to move forward. i took the initiative to change careers from a science teacher to a technology specialist 3 years ago. Shortly after that i realized that what i thought i knew wasn’t much at all and that my own thoughts were not going to cut it. i needed to learn more. Enter my personal learning network-Twitter, Netvibes, Blogs, Ning…the list goes on and changes daily. i still feel like the more i learn the less i know. initiative is what changed my path, initiative and determination have led me to live on 3 continents, visit over 15 countries, to learn another language, to learn how to surf, windsurf, and kitesurf. Initiative has led me to my passions, my passions have led me here.
ilearninitiative.org is maintained by me, Jeff Dungan. I Currently living in Shanghai, China with my wife and two kids. I still come to work everyday excited to see what happens. I like to swear. A lot. I enjoy talking about education, I also enjoy talking about complete nonsense. Laughing is good, so is coca-cola out of a glass bottle. Beer is also good in a glass bottle come to think of it. I enjoy anything involving water and wind (preferably warm and tropical and over 20 knots-What the hell am I doing in Shanghai?) and spending time with my family. We are an international family, with our kids being born in 2 different countries (Colombia and the Dominican Republic). I have HUGE plans and they involve changing the face of k-12 education and beyond-the world over…no really. Now, if only I could find my keys.
